Effective and safe disinfection with
Chlorine dioxide
ClO2 an ideal disinfection for Cooling Towers
In industrial cooling tower, presence of biofilm is a major concern
as they can have a crippling effect on cooling water circuits.

Biofilms are layers of bacterial colonies which form saccharine or
“sugar” linkages between these colonies. This results in the
formation of a film or slime layer on the substrate or any surface
in the water circuit. They utilize nutrients and other microbes
present in water to propagate and increase in thickness.

Economic effects:
a. Reduction of heat transfer efficiency:
Biofilms are mostly
water and are effectively stagnation areas. These areas have one-
fifth the conductivity value of carbonate scale. Hence 1mm of
bioslime has the same effect as a 5mm carbonate scale layer.
b. Corrosion: Sulfate and Iron Reducing Bacteria in the circuit can greatly increase the corrosion rate in the
pipelines
c. Friction loss: These films result in increase of friction losses leading to higher head requirements and
energy costs.

Health effects:
Bacteria like Legionella residing in the biofilms can reach critical pathogenic concentrations and result in
outbreaks of Legionnaires disease. It is essential to keep biofilms under check to prevent any such
outbreaks.
ClO2 is the best-known disinfectant for effective destruction of biofilms in cooling towers. ClO2 has the
ability to penetrate the bioslime layers and destroy the microbes residing in the slime.

Mechanism of disinfection by ClO2:
Chlorine dioxide disinfects by disrupting metabolic cycles of microorganisms due to its effect on DNA. This
makes it effective against even virus spores. This characteristic of chlorine dioxide also ensures perfect
disinfection of the water eliminating bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae, protozoa etc.

Other important disinfection characteristics of ClO2 :
        Highly pH independent
        Negligible THM formation

Benefits of the Oxiperm Pro system
        Compact system, also for confined spaces
        Low operating costs
        Stable product solution, can be stored for several days
        Integrated measured value logging
        Little installation work
        Robust design
